The hands-free card was first introduced in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to embody the "lifestyle" vehicle of the 21st century. However, despite a detailed design brief that was based on more than thousands of customer interviews, which examined their lifestyles, habits, and expectations, Renault ran out of time to design prototypes and test every possible uses.
Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was staying in a hotel at the time and used his room key to unlock his car. As the key featured tiny magnetic strips, Bernard Dumondel thought it might be possible to make a car key that functioned in a similar way.
In the years following, the card was hailed as a revolutionary technology and is now offered on two out of every three Renault vehicles. While smartphones seem to be in the process of replacing it, Renault has chosen to take advantage of the new technology without letting the hands-free card fall by the wayside.
The keyless entry system
The hands-free card of Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it first came out 20 years ago. replacement renault megane key card remains similar, but the technology inside has received several improvements to make it more user-friendly as well as harder to hack.
It can't be used from outside to open doors or start the car until the driver has activated it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are programmed to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key can still function from a distance, allowing you to start the car's ignition but not to unlock the doors, which is to ensure your safety.
The second aspect is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system make use of a rolling code. This reduces the chance of the security being breached by someone who intercepts and retransmits the control message in order to gain access, but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the risk altogether.
